Proposal for Studio Kura Artist in Residence
In 2024, I began a series of multimedia drawings on paper that relate to the sculptures and installations I have been making since 2021 (for reference, examples of these sculptures, installations, and current works on paper can be found on my website with specific links below). The completed drawing series will potentially be shown in solo exhibitions in the upcoming two years. Having a period of time and space to make artwork is an invaluable gift. I will utilize my time spent at Studio Kura to finish this series of drawings on paper, completing 10 layered, multimedia drawings at the residency. Drawings in this series range from 64cm to 76cm wide and are created with drawing and water-based media and collage.
In addition, I plan to develop ideas for future sculptures and sculptural installations in the form of small sketches at Studio Kura. In March of 2026 (03/2026) I will be participating in a short paper making workshop at Paper Art Studio in Japan with the goal of learning non-traditional, sculptural paper-making techniques. I hope to use these techniques in the creation of future sculptural installations. I will spend some of my time at Studio Kura developing ideas for sculptures as preparation for my workshop at Paper Art Studio.
I am grateful to have participated in a number of artist residencies in the past, and appreciate the time and space those experiences have afforded to my artistic practice. I have also found that the interaction between artists and the chance to work in a new environment, culture, and country can be a profoundly life-changing experience. I look forward to building new relationships and friendships, and sharing with the community of artists and residency staff at Studio Kura. Thank you for your consideration of my application.
